I was walking a trail along the Susquehanna River south of where 372 crosses the river. Found this old structure. Not really sure what its purpose was. Any ideas? 20170409_093417.jpg

Iron Furnace was My first Guess.

My brother thinks it's a column for an old bridge or railroad. Only 3 sides are exposed. The structure is butted up against a hill.

Im chiming in as a long-time PA resident.....my vote goes to furnace. 2nd option for me would be a mill of some type and 3rd a bridge or rr column.
No matter what, it's always fun exploring around especially when you find something like that! Nice.

Edit: spelling

I got to check out an iron furnace over the weekend. Similar setting as what's in your pic but the structure is different. Very close to a hillside on the bank of a small creek just downstream of a waterfall. There was also a little canal system coming from the creek to in front of the furnace. Sorry for the crappy IPhone pics.

Could have been for burning limestone into lime too.
