I'm a Newby

Hello all!

I am considering purchasing a Metal Detector and taking up the hobby...I have read the posts re: what is a good detector (ace 250 seems like the general concensus) and am researching where to buy it at a good price.

Anyway, I live in Centre County, and was wondering if you guys could give me any tips on where a novice might begin searching.

Also, are there any laws or regulations, or even just general etiquette (besides obv. getting permission to search private property) that I should be aware of?

Looking forward to getting some exercise with my dogs and maybe finding some cool stuff too :)

Have a White's Prizm II. Good intro level detector. Have had much fun with it. Not found the big treasure but do consider myself the self-appointed park/beach clean-up lady. ;D

If you need any tips on how to find fishing lures or soda cans buried in the sand let me know. I'm also good at finding bottle caps and cheap costume jewelry. ;)

Whatever detector you get, good luck and enjoy!

Re: I'm a Newby

Ryan,

Welcome aboard. Glad to have you here. There are a lot of people here who like the ACE 250. I hear it is a good little machine. As far as where you can detect, some places are parks, lake beaches (state parks), old drive in theatres, county fair locations, old swimming holes, old house sites, etc. The list is endless. Stay out of national parks with a detector. I would check to see if your municipality has regulations on metal detecting. Always fill in your holes and take the trash with you.

Hope it helps and look forward to pics of your finds.

Re: I'm a Newby

Thanks for the tips! I already have a few places in mind :)

I was kinda hoping you all could just pinpoint a pot of gold or something for me haha! I'll hold my breath for that bit of information!!!!!!!

So everyone pretty much agrees that the 250 is a good detector to start out with?

Wow Jeff,
You sure carry a lot of stuff. What is your pack mules name? LOL You are better prepared than a boy scout. I would be tired before I got there. Maybe that's why you find all of the good stuff and I find tabs. I do carry a bit of that stuff in the car but would have to hike back if needed. Thanks for the all of the great suggestions!

I pack my Jimmy in the Spring & empty it in the Late Fall.
Don't do much Long Distance Hiking, So most of the time it's a less then 10 Minute walk to
the vehicle when necessary. (this past year I forgot a Main Detector part Spare at home
And Wouldn't you know it, That was the part I needed :( the spare upper detector Arm )

I wish I could get those Guys on tv to "PIMP MY RIDE" so everything would
be easier to find though.

Re: I'm a Newby

look for a used sovereign, more complicated than the ace but with a 180 meter and set in auto, it is basically a turn on and go machine.do a little homework check out www.metaldetectorreviews.net to see what others think of the sov, the ace and many other machines. a nice sov with meter can be had in the $320-$375 range.the sov is legendary and if you decide you don,t care for md ing you'll be able to sell for what you paid. i previously had a whites xlt and in my own yard i found six coins (all over 5 in. deep) in 20 minutes after i got the sov and for another$100 or so you can get what i consider the best detector going, the explorer . an explorer xs can be had in $450 range so do some research,go to home page on this site, scroll down to metal detector reviews by brand, click on minelab and ask some questions on the forum. you'll see,MINELAB RULES!!!....GOOD LUCK. P.S you can't use ace in wet sand at beach but the sov is one of the best at beach, just a great detector.

Re: I'm a Newby

A lot of good posts from people with more MD'ing than me, but I'd like
to add one thing. When you're out hunting & have all that gear, just make sure when you leave your vehicle, don't leave anything worthwhile laying
around for others to see & make sure your car is locked up. Oh, yeah an
extra set of car keys stashed in your gear or somewhere safe is an idea.
Good luck.
