MOUNT PLEASANT — Fire officials suspect sparks from a PPL power line ignited the fire that gutted an abandoned trailer and adjacent structure at 16 Pleasant Road on Saturday afternoon.

“Apparently, the trailer must have had power to it, and the power line was sparking,” said Joe Zula, a firefighter with Mount Pleasant Hose Company.

It took firefighters from eight area fire companies about a half-hour to contain the blaze, reported about 2:30 p.m. Firefighters were called back to the scene about 5:35 p.m. when the fire rekindled.

Flames ignited a small brush fire in the wooded area behind the structures, but that was also quickly contained, Mount Pleasant Hose Company Chief Charles Kline said,

“Luckily, it’s a swampy area up there, with streams criss-crossing, so it didn’t get far,” Kline said.

Foster Township Supervisor Rick Zula, who was at the scene, said he wasn’t sure who owned the property.

“There are several owners. I really can’t name for sure who the owners are,” he said.

“These structures have been abandoned for about three years, but I’m not sure who owns the property,” Kline said.

No firefighters were injured battling the blaze.

South Cass Citizens Fire Company, Clover Fire Company, Forestville Citizens Fire Company, Good Intent Hose Company No. 1, Phoenix Park Fire Company, Lavelle Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 and Minersville Ambulance assisted at the scene.
