PINE GROVE — A local creek may become a river.
Township supervisors voted Wednesday night 4-1 to send a letter of support to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to change Swatara Creek to Swatara River.
Supervisor Jerry Wise was opposed.
The agency wrote a letter of request to the township June 16 stating they received a proposal that the creek’s name be changed in order to better describe its size and characteristics.
The creek runs through sections of Schuylkill, Lebanon and Dauphin counties. The board wrote in the letter to the township that it received affirmative replies from Lebanon County, the Berks County Conservation District, the Lebanon County Conservation District, North Londonderry Township board of supervisors, Palmyra Borough council and the state names authority.
The U.S. Board on Geographic Names is responsible for making decisions regarding geographic names for use by the departments and agencies of the Federal government.
