I'll have to wait till next year

Over the summer, we had a chance to hit an off road trail which we drove once before. Back then (2006) we had an escort. An old man in his gmc mini van made this trail with us. The trail itself was in my eyes easy back then. Today or Last Sept we wanted to take the trail ourselves (alone).

But once we located the trail, (entrance had changed due to years of flooding) we started out driving low gear up a steep incline.. its one of those types of trails where once you enter, you can't turn around and go back.

This trail which meandered down and trough the New River Gorge was/is listed as a state maintained road.. but after driving this road for a while.. I could see that the state had other plans or simply ignored the trail for several years.

I had a video of about 12 mins of the first part of this trail.. but due to time constraints.. and editing errors.. it was lost. However, I do have a few stills of the last few miles of the trail. Lets just say.. we dodged rock slides, mud slides, fallen trees, deep mud pits and one lone bolder.

There was one thing I was worried about, two weeks before we wanted to take this trail, I traded my mud terrains for goodyear sr-a's (more of a street tire) and I was worried they wouldn't hold up on the trail..

Here is an exit shot;

At this point I was happy to be able to stop and take a breather.. driving white knuckle isn't as fun I would have hoped due to my faulty hands.. more than once my wife nearly panicked thinking we were going over the edge.. I think at this point we are going to stick to a few old logging trails I know about if we want to ever attempt this again..

Wildman.. very scenic, and I'm not sure if you know the trail I'm talking about.. I believe they (the state) just let the road go.. and its turned into a ATV type trail.. tight spots with twists and turns. The night before we camped out at greenbrior and was rained out.. the river floors our camp site.. needless to say this is how our adventures always end up..

Oh and btw.. after returning home (Maryland) our check engine light comes on.. turns out its the Cats Converts.. Fortunately.. it was covered under the federal emissions law 8 year or 80,000 miles.. so at least one good thing came out of our trip.. got a new cat convert installed..

There's a ton of them old roads like that around there. We use to spend weekends traveling them types of roads camping at night on the side.
