Need help identifying piece of crockery!

I need help to ID a piece of crockery that belongs to a friend. It is glazed and about 8" tall. It has only one small opening near the bottom; the handle on the top is only that, a handle, and is not removable. It seems that with only one opening there wouldn't be enough back-pressure to have made it very useable. I would love to know the use of the item and its approximate age.

I think you are correct about this being a chicken waterer. No doubt, it had a companion ceramic basin that it sat in.
