Hi Community,

Does anyone know the Pattern, Maker, or Country of origin for this lovely Painted Ceramic Piece. The edges are trimmed in metal, possibly brass.

Welcome to Tnet

I would be sure that’s a Moroccan spice jar and probably made in the city of Safi as export ware to the West. They still make them today for sale in trendy stores and they’re widely sold as souvenirs in Moroccan markets too. You’ll find them in plain pottery and also trimmed with brass or white metal but they’re difficult to date because modern ones are often deliberately made in an artisanal fashion to simulate older pieces.

There’s a large company called “Serghini” that has been making a lot of this stuff since about 1832, but there have also been numerous small workshops making them over the years. If yours has no signature then there’s not much more that can be said. Here’s a few examples (the first piece is vintage Serghini and signed as such):

You didn't say how big it is. It looks larger than normal, such that it may be for use by a merchant rather than for home use. That may be a pointer for it not being modern export ware. Larger ones might also be used for things other than spices (tea, coffee or even rice).
