"Cash 4 Gold" You've seen the commercials

Syracuse, New York (WSYR-TV) - We've all seen the commercials -- send in your old gold, and get cash in return. It may sound enticing, especially around this time of year, since we could all use some extra cash.

But here’s The Real Deal on how much you can make if you go for the gold, and whether there's a better option.

We ordered a gold kit from "Cash 4 Gold" and gathered two gold necklaces, four bracelets, a pair of earrings, two rings and two charms, ranging from 10 karat to 24 karat.

They send you the postage paid envelope, tell you to just slip your gold inside and mail it.

Though a customer says on their commercial that she got a check within 24 hours, you won't actually get a check that quickly. It was two weeks before we heard back from the company. And for everything we sent, we got a check for $112.34.

That might not sound that bad, but what we didn't tell Cash 4 Gold was that we had taken the exact same pieces to a pawn shop the week before and they were going to give us $766.74 – a $650 difference.

When we emailed the company to let them know their check would be returned, and we wanted the gold back, things got even more interesting.

They returned my email the same day, asking me how much I was expecting. When I told them I had an offer for about $750, they said they couldn't give me that, but bumped their offer up to $302.

If a pawn shop offered $750 that means it is really worth $1500

A pawn shop is the 2nd to last place I would sell PMs, cash for gold is the last.

That said, nobody here offer to sell me any gold! Because I would try for $100

If you dont have a good local coin dealer who is honest to sell to, I would recommend a company like Apmex or Tulving. I have heard good things about both companies but I have not sold any to either of them.

Interesting - and I'll add someone else's experience. Sent her old diamond ring and a bracelet in. It didn't take 24 hours either, it took considerably longer (I don't know how long - I am telling this, second hand).

Anyway, they did send her a check, with a paper that explained how much gold was in the articles.

Unfortunately - after she cashed the check, it occurred to her that she didn't have the diamond, and they didn't pay for it, nor return it.

A phone call revealed that - she accepted the offer and cashed the check - they only paid for the gold - too bad, so sad.

So - if you do use a service like that, if you have a stones you don't want "pocketed", take it out of the ring.

It would have been nice if they'd weighed the gold before sending it to see exactly what the scrap value would have been. Granted, gold prices fluctuate on an hourly and daily rate but they'd have a ballpark figure. If they guarantee next day delivery of the check, I'll bet they take the shipping cost off your end, not they're end.

Pop the stones 1st anytime you scrap the gold. Most melee diamonds (1 to 2 point stones) go for about $100 @ carat and can be sold separately on ebay.

As for Cyberdan's comment, yes most pawn shops will offer 30 to 50% of melt value BUT I also knew a lady that pawned her grandmother's 3/4 ct mine cut engagement ring for $100 (what she wanted to borrow so she could get it back) and didn't come back for it.

I had a friend (dummy) who sent in some- he should have known better but they got a guarantee (send your gold back). Anyways they sent him an assay sheet that said he sent them 1/2oz of 18K and a check for $40.
When he called and complained they said to send the check back and they would return his gold. 2 weeks later he got the same $40 check back with a note- "Sorry we lost your gold, this is all ya get". HH Mark

Usually saying they are Buying Gold, Silver, Nazi Items, WW2 etc.

last time I checked it's called FRAUD, and since they use the US postal service, it's mail fraud which is a felony
my advice: call your state attorney general and make a written complaint and file with the state
that way it's written down hard copy and has a file date with case number

I just read that. I mean...is anybody really surprised?? Come on !!

One commenter had a good point, they probably know thieves will use it to at least get something for stolen gold. The rest are just fools.

Like in the States, over here in Aussie land there are a lot of small hillbilly like hamlets that don't have access to a pawn shop. I think this service cash4gold offers is a great idea.
Maybe there is a franchise opportunity here.
After the weekend I'll be ringing up the States to get a gold kit posted over to Australia.
