Gold Price

Hello this is Joe from Ohio, When I retired in 1998 the company I worked for gave me as they do all retires a pure gold token with my name, company name etc. At that time I think it was worth around $300.00. Today it is worth around $1400.00.
I know nothing about buying and selling gold and a week or two ago I was at a mall and some guy had a booth set up and was wanting to buy gold. I told him about my token and asked what he would give for it. Then I think it was worth around $1200.00 and he said he could give me $800.00 for it and that I wouldn't be able to find anyone who would give more. That was $500.00 les than what it was worth.
Anyway just wondering how much it would sell for and if the $800.00 was the correct amount who are the people that are giving $1400.00 a ounch to make it worth that much, I just thought that if the price of gold is $1400.00 a ounch then I thought I could sell it for close to that.
