How do you determine the scrap value of jewelry?

How is the scrap value of jewelry, or other items made of gold or silver determined? For instance, if an item is marked 12kt gold and weighs 15 grams (just an example), how much is its gold scrap value and how is that determined? How does that apply to items that are gold filled (1/20th g.f. etc)?

    A) this is how I do it - quite simple. today gold is $1500 and there are 31.1 grams per ounce and 24K in pure gold.

    1500 divided by 31.1 divided by 24 = $2.00 per gram/Karat

take that number and multiply by weight and K
    $2 times 12 times 15 = $360

    B) for 1/20 GF take the $360 and divide by 20 = $18
