Well its been a while but here I am. I got out this morning and walked about 2 miles to a nice gravel bar area. Did about 6 or so pans from various areas and had ZERO luck. It was nice to dip the pan in the water but it was cold this morning. It was about 34F (thats 1C for you non-american blokes). There is a TON of black sand here but no gold in the field. I brought home all my panning cons to process through classification properly just to be safe. Here are some pictures of the gravel bar and the dig site. As a side note, i was worried i was going to be in trouble for digging here as it is owned by the county. Turns out, I ran into a fella who is the Maintenance Contractor for the area. He gave me full 100% permission to do whatever i want when it comes to prospecting as long as it does not disturb ground away from the river. Looks like i will be taking the bazooka and a real shovel soon!

Doesn't it feel good to find gold no matter where you may go? Nicely done Ducky!

That spot looks good!. Chocolate milk in the pan, lots of black sand. Endless supply of material. Break out the bazooka and see what happens!. When dealing with heavy black sands and small gold I leave my snuffer at home.

    Hey Duck,

Looks like there is gold to be found where your at. Agree with Mytime.... Find an inside bend, sample it across, find the gold streak, and start feeding the sluice! Looking forward to seeing more posts from ya.

So how far away from the photo with the bedrock were you. Have you looked at the area you are prospecting with Google Earth? Would be interesting to see where the river path was in 1937, 1955, 1987, etc. May find a good spot to start sampling from that data. Good luck.

Got out this morning. This spot is about a mile from bedrock. I'm starting to think my cons from the other day may have been contaminated... I zooked for about an hour with morning and pulled nothing but glass, fishing weights and birdshot. I even fully classified at the river. Something I rarely do. Not a spec!

Edit: I met a guy on the trail today, he is super nice. Great historian on the local area. We are meeting up Thursday morning to hit some bedrock to see if we can get some gold.

Good luck DuckWalk with the bedrock adventure. With the lead your were finding, if there was gold in that stretch you likely would have found some mixed with all that lead - time to move to a new spot. I met up today with Shofs (another Denver prospector) and we hit a stretch of the Platte River that had exposed bedrock - but together we only found 60-70 small specs of color. Will also be moving along to another location. The hunt is on!
