Pirates in Florida & The West Indies

One of the best pirate books readily available today is The Pirates of the New England Coast 1630-1730 by George Francis Dow and John Henry Edmonds (New York: 1996). This is a trade paperback reprint of the 1923 first edition (Marine Research Society, Salem, Mass) and a pretty pricey item in the original hardcover.

I'm writing about this book because the title does not do it justice. There is a considerable amount of accurate information on pirates not only along the New Englad Coast but also in Florida and the Caribbean. This is an essential pirate book, and a bargin at the price!

By the way - the map on pages xxvi & xxvii is by Captain Southack. It turned out to show quite correctly the site of the wreck of the pirate ship Whydah - spelled "Whidah" on the map because Barry Clifford had not yet found her bell.

If you are interested in pirate lore that is not only highly entertaining but very reliable, this is the book for you! Perhaps it isn't too late to add it to your Christmas Wish List...

Good luck to all,
