Books on identifying silver and gemstones?

Know of any good reading on this subject? My biggest problem is identifying silver earrings. Some have the stamp but some just have no place for it. Also I have absolutely no idea how to identify gemstones. Is there any reading online to help? Or any good books?

there is a great book at library called Audobon society book of minerals excellent for field guide.

odd shaped book...maybe 3 1/2" wide, 10" tall, and an inch thick.

Great book. I'd buy one!

I think I goofed up the exact name, but if you ask, they'll find it for you.

or you can Google web minerals for a very good reference.

Silver... it takes acid comparison to test and must destroy object so not just testing the surface, which might be plated. But if it's THAT small, who cares? It's worth more as an object than the actual value of the metal.
If you can't yardsale it, or sell it off in a coffee shop or pub, toss it in with the rest of the scrap when you send it all in for the melt.

sry to be a clunk in the bucket, it's ALL fun, but not a LOT of glory unless you are consistently hitting a significant amount... or big fat gold rings, or precision works of art with mondo carat jewels in them!
...sure beats a clad coin, though!
