Relic and battle site areas in South Texas (Rio Grande Valley)

Does anyone metal detect old sites here in the Rio Grande Valley? Sites not protected by the government that produce relics? I know one of the last confrontations of the Civil War was held in Brownsville, TX but i beleive it to be in private property or government protected land Anyone with any kind of info please let me know.
