i think that it's a stick pin, the shaft is about 3" long...

i found one once i was going to bring it home but my wife said no way thats going in my house i called the local police put red flaging tape on the trees in the area they could not miss it & told them its civil war found NY buttons near it i even tape the buttons to it but did not here any thing about it no call back nothing not even in the news
