I think I would try to lookup old plantations if I lived in the south, I know there were so many

type in the names of towns, townships, counties
and see what comes up.

Get more detail by adding words like history, grove, swimming, maps , aerials etc.

Also do this on EBay and see what Books & Post cards show up.

Example :

georgia swimming on Ebay got 175 post cards, Including

Swainsboro GA Swimming Pool Bathing Scene c1910 Postcard
IMG_0713341.JPG

to narrow things down type in particular town names, change Georgia to GA,
change swimming to picnic, or ball game, etc, etc

Then in the case of books see if your library or historical society has them, or buy if cheap.

GOOGLE

Example, I Typed in Georgia 19th century maps

got this

Georgia Maps

Notice 4th. down for example

Georgia Aerial Photographs
Aerial photographs from the 1930s through the 1980s; indexed by county.

You'll be surprised at what you can find on old aerials

also got
Georgia's Official State Highway & Transportation Maps

Georgia Official Highway & Transportation Maps

by typing in: Georgia Department of Transportation Maps historical

if that doesn't work add the word: County, (Georgia Department of Transportation Maps county historical)
& try again

Some of this maps mark old ballfields, picnic groves, etc.

Just do allot of searching using key words.

Search for Diary's & Memories posted online through Google.

Example, the words: georgia gold coin fell

top hit was
New Georgia Encyclopedia: Confederate Gold

www.georgiaencyclopedia.orgHistory and Archaeology
Aug 3, 2007 – trading and that, as Richmond, Virginia, fell to Union forces at the end of ... However, he did not find $200,000 in gold coins from the Georgia ...

It could as well have been someones
diary entry from the 1800's of
some kid going to the store & Dropping a gold coin & Never finding it
.

Use your Imagination, the sky's the limit.

I've even typed in "I buried it out back" and searched for enteries
that were possible local leads :laughing7:

again use your imagination "I buried it out back", "I buried it by the shed",
"I hid it in the corn field", "I dropped it down the hole",
"We skipped coins", "we threw quarters at them" etc.

Good Luck !

Good post Jeff! Excellent info. Some I never thought of. Hope you don't mind if I try it for my location. Younghunt, I know moving to a new location and finding new sites can be hard, but don't forget an important connection, the locals. Befriend some of them and ask about the local history. You may be surprised at what you learn. I have also PM'd you some tips in the past, give them some consideration.
