Is there a way to restore a very rusted iron object? I was out hunting an old homestead today and found a very old elephant head. I can tell that it is a leg to some kind of small table. It is rusted pretty bad from being in the ground for so long and I wanted to see if there was a way to somewhat restore it maybe?

I've heard putting iron in a hot fire removes the rust. They do it with iron pans n such

That looks allot like a leg from a wood stove to my novice eyes. Did you have other indications that pointed to a table leg. I have only recently begun relic hunting so anything I can learn is gravy to me.

Apple Cider Vinegar. Buy a gallon at the grocery store, and make sure the iorn is compleltly submerged in the vinegar (I use a plastic foot tub). Let it soak for 48-hours, then flip it over, and let it soak another 24-hours. Take it out and use a stiff brush and warm ater to clean it off, them give it a VERY light coating of olive oil.

yeah thats what someone else had said. They said it looked like a leg from a cook stove or room stove. If you look at the top you can see where it was attached I guess to something and the bottom of the trunk is a perfect foot for the leg. This was in the middle of the woods around the homestead that I found. The only trace of the place is the very base of the chimney and if I didnt see the bricks in it I would have thought it was a big rock. Other than that you cant tell anything was there until you put the detector to the ground. You could literally put a shovel in the ground anywhere around there and dig something up guaranteed. I found the elephant not far from the 1907 coca cola watch fob I posted about yesterday.

I have a cast iron eagle stove and it has legs like that on it and i have three of them that is good and the forth is broken and the are just like that if you would be interested in getting rid of it please let me know . Message me or email me @ [email protected]
