I'd bet on a purse. Google up "flapper purse" you should get a lot of examples. They are chainmail purses that were very popular during the gay ole days of boot leg booze speak easys & dancing. If by chance you can't find any pics let me know & I'll post a pic of one I have.

Id say a fancy Removable lid a Lady would put on her Cold cremes and such.When it was empty they would put that fancy lid On the new jar.Just a guess.
