Found my first skeleton key! Should have seen my eyes light up when I popped it out of the plug. Just something about these keys that symbolize a simpler day and age, a symbol of times forgotten, a key to the past... Literally!!

Great find. You sound like me. Some things just really get me going. Holding it in your hand and thinking about the past. That's what is great about this hobby.

I found this one last year! I felt the same way when I poped it out of the ground. No more than a foot beside it I found a V Nickel!

Great find. Congrats.
I also found my first one on 4/30/15 plus a marble in the same hole. I was very happy to finally find a skeleton.

Every interior door of our 1890's Victorian home has similar keys.

Formerly owned a 1906 Craftsman and a 1935 Spanish Revival with same type of key.

I would suspect they were installed up to the 1940's at the latest before Schlage and others began offering alternative latching methods, like push or twist button locks on bathrooms, and the like.

Somewhere out there in cyberspace is available data and charts as to the evolution of the skeleton key.
