This was several inches below grade at an old river ford. It is iron and only about five inches long. The head has some impact marks. There was some numbers on the handle, but pitted beyond recognition. I have not been able to find out what it was used for. Any ideas?

It may have the appearance of a hammer, but I think that is coincidental. I don't know what it is, just don't think it's a type of hammer.

Could be part of a monkey wrench, but something about it just isn't clicking with me. I'm kinda leaning towards a piece of machinery that used a cog wheel. The "part" would raise up and allow the cog to advance one (or more) notches. Thoughts??

It could be a Blacksmiths tool.
