Over the weekend me and a friend went out to a known Union camp. We parked the truck in about the same spot we always do and set out walking. We've hit this site before and others before us have dug. After about 3 hours of walking and no good digs I went back to the truck for a drink and BAM! Less than 15 feet from the truck came the first Minie of the day. Grab a drink and walk to the other side of the truck again less than 15 feet out anouther Minie. Me and my friend spend the next hour or so digging a total of 8 bullets and a napsack buckle. I've heard it's just natural to think we've gotta go further to get the good finds, and most of us think the same way.

This is so true. Years ago a fellow reenactor and relic hunter who was pretty well known from our area took his wife relic hunting for her very first time. They were hunting behind Confetrit' trenches which now is a park. They had to walk through some woods just off from where they parked which was littered with a lot of modern trash, beer cans, etc. He explained to his wife not to waste time turning on her detector until they reached their spot. A few minutes later they realized his wife was lagging behind. They called out for her and she called back excitedly for them to join her. As they approached her they found her busily digging a whole about 4 feet in circumference about12 inches down. She dug a whole and recovered from what I remember between 20 and 25 brass US box plates with the lead and hooks being melted and removed from the back of the plates. Being as to these being found behind Confetrit' lines and being rendered useless they felt these plates were captured from prisoners and discarded. Her first trip out, but this was years ago.

I found a breastplate earlier this year. 10' from the road. Found TWO iron axes 6", yes, inches from the side of the dirt road.

I think it is also natural for people to park in the same general spots. A good spot to park is a good spot to park, and nobody detects where their car is parked.
