My 9-year old son found this axe head with a cheap metal detector next to our garden. It was about 5" deep in heavy clay, but I plowed this area last year with a 12" deep plow and also hit it with a rototiller so it could have been either deeper or more shallow.

My son is very excited about it and I plan to check this forum later for ideas on a higher-quality detector.

Our farmhouse was built in the mid 1800s and was probably an active farm until the property was divided up in the 1950s. It was found only about 100' from the house. It weighs 3 lbs 12 ozs.

I can't match it up with any on the axe charts I have seen. It seems to either have some sort of lip or lug, or it was a poor casting and part of the cheek broke off. I used a bench grinder wire wheel on it to get a huge amount of corrosion and crust off, so it is relatvely cleaned up in the phots.

Any ideas on age/type? Much appreciation in advance. Image (7).jpeg Image (6).jpeg Image (5).jpeg Image (4).jpeg
