I found some old maps with creekside markings on them that modern maps show as lighthouses. I knew that had to be something else so I sent it off to the USGS. After they found an old expert the marks were identified as mills.
North Carolina had mills everywhere.

100% correct. Mills were usually shown with a sunburst design on the old maps.

Cool site. :)

See reply #3.

They don't specify what kind of mill it was on these maps, but they do show where the site was.

I missed that. Thanks.

No problem. Here's another style of mill marking from a map of mine--to give you an idea of what variety of sunburst-style marks they used...

Checked out the mills located in California (12) and found that the Sawyer Mill is located inside of Disneyland...

Don't think they would let me in the gate with a MD unit...

Disney recently renovated the 50 year old submarine ride and recovered approximately $200,000 in coins that were taken to the county dump...

Mixed with dirt, oil, decayed food and other unknown toxic matter and found to be near impossible and costly to reclaim...

So as the Seven Dwarfs sang...To the Dump...To the Dump...To the Dump...we go. ;D

Did you see the post from the person of checked out an old carwash? Apparently the drains and what was cleaned out of them held a lot of coin....

Makes me want to become a sewer rat. ;D

Thanks Gypsy Witch. A great place to start. Already picked out a couple of places. Thanks again. Good luck to you also. Thanks so much for sharing the 411.
