I found this piece at an early 1800's farm east of Toronto a couple of weeks ago and felt it was worth the effort to try to find out what it might have been. I started by tumbling it for 72 hours and changed the 'cleaning solution' every 12 hours. After that, I glued the two pieces back together using 'Weld-Bond' glue, I then gave it a light coat of natural Bees Wax. I've found Bees Wax works well to even out the patina/finish and bring out the original detail on coins and other metals that have been in the ground.

After the piece had been 'cleaned' of it's corrosion I was finally able to give it a closer inspection under a loop and discovered, it still has some of its original bronze/gold finish! It also has flowers and vines cast into it!
:o

I still have no idea what this piece might have been. It's been suggested it might have been a door-handle from a wardrobe or a handle from a vanity mirror.

How flat is the tip? Any chance it's a letter opener?

No, it's much too thick to be a letter opener. :icon_scratch:
It's most likely a dressing mirror handle.

Thanks for your help Jersey,
Dave

Either a vanity hand mirror

handle like this. Vanity Hand Mirror Handles.
The link takes you to Google search for 1800s vanity hand mirrors
Or put in 1800s hair brush

Or a hand brush handle from the same time period.
Notice the end where the mirror would attach matches perfectly. Or close enough.

Thanks for the research work you put into identifying this roadrunner! :occasion14:
Taking into consideration the design on the handle, I think this piece dates to the late Victorian or Art Deco periods. Either way, I felt it was just too beautiful to chuck in the trash!

Best of luck to you,
Dave
