Should I have this hat badge restored?

I dug this Indian Wars era U.S. Hat badge earlier this year. It was extremely bent up, and I straightened it out before I realized what it was. I managed not to break it, I was so glad as it's surely one of my best finds, especially finding it North of the border.

One day a couple weeks ago I noticed that the back piece had broken off. I think being in the moist soil for so long ate away the metal where it was attached, and as it dried out it fell off.

I have seen some amazing restorations on this forum and I'm wondering if it's worth getting this repaired, and who would be a good person to do it.

Thanks

Can't comment on the restoration, but that is really a nice piece. If mine, I would leave it as is and do something to prolong its life.

Thanks Simon, and to be clear I was only thinking of having the piece reattached. I'd like to keep it "as is" in every other way. I like the dug look.

I admit, my heart sank when I saw it had broken all by itself...after surviving being brutally bent, living in the dirt for a century, and then me straightening it haha

That's a beautiful find, I'd definitely consider having it restored if you plan on keeping it. :headbang:

Here's the contact info for a guy I used last December to restore a c.1850 British Knapsack Badge.

Thank you ANTIQUARIAN! Wow he did a great job on your bent up badge. I like how the restoration corrected the bends and weak points, and made it presentable while still looking like a relic.

I'd really like to get my two pieces joined properly so it's solid and together.

Thanks for the information, I will get in touch with Roland!

I got my badge back from Roland at Hallowed Ground Restorations yesterday, and I am very pleased. He reattached the back pin, and evened out the missing gold plating while maintaining a dug look. Thanks ANTIQUARIAN for recommending him! ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1456592334.038638.jpg ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1456592361.076920.jpg

I would. Thats an incredible find. And US troops did enter Canada more than once in pursuit of hostile Indians.

Thanks, the pics right above your comment are of the restored piece. I did a bunch of investigating into the history of the badge, and while I may never be sure, it could very well have been at the Wounded Knee massacre. I was very happy to have found it.

Sorry for missing your follow up post on the restoration of your Indian Wars era U.S. Hat Badge Cache.
Ro did an amazing job, the before and after pics show how talented he really is... not to mention affordable! :laughing7:
