Thanks IP..Can u tell by the back??
Thats what through me off.

yep. They have an iron shank. I've dug about 40 of them over the years. If this is a place you'd expect a replica is possible, then that's what it is.... but if not, then worth looking into and would be something new to me.

Not all of them have a iron shank. I've found lots field cast with a pewter shank.

Well post em up, and your other Loyalist finds would be great to see too because I have a pretty good idea where you are digging to have found many RPs. I have never dug a non iron shank one in about 40, but also have not found any of the more crude variants, so I would definitely not rule out a cast with a pewter shank, and the button above does look pretty good from the front. I'm sure Vino would would want to see them more than me, that's if he hasn't already been told by someone it's possible and is legit.

Would love to see a few more pictures George. The pewter looks to have significant age. Given the site's provenance I'm definitely curious.

I agree, and should have probably taken that more into account, because when it comes to this stuff new things do turn up so everything should be considered.

I'm curious now because that style of shank is not what I'd expect from a Rev War period button. It's more similar to what was used on later pewters, and foreign pewters, and of course reproductions. So if the buttonbandit posts ones with the same type of shank, or a mixed variety, that certainly makes your button a whole lot more interesting. It would make more sense too because the front looks like it is early. I'm curious to see how this goes.

Definitely agree with IP, the front looks promising...really hope you didn't toss this one George. I have found crude pewter cast buttons at my site that are period with pewter shanks, but nothing definitively Rev War. This is one such example http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/revolutionary-war/470810-british-rev-war-pewter.html.

I'm still with my initial thought. Reproduction. If you found it where other fakes were, or reenactments happened, that would pretty much seal it for me.
