Out of curiosity, does anyone have a weakness for opals?

I for one do, I perfer to cut and fix my opals myself; some examples of my work below.
One of them was set in 925 Silver by a friend. (silver heart)
One of them is for sale on opal auctions. ("Blue heart")

those are so pretty.....but still not the Gem I received from Cappy in the mail....I have searched high and low for one like it...does anyone know what kind of stone emits it's own light?...sort of like you see in the inside of the beautiful Opal...but much brighter.

The title "fire" opal that I used was in reference to the white opaque opal with the gold looking flecks that reflect a lot of light when the stone is formed and polished into a cab. The more flecks in the stone equalled more "fire"; and the higher the quality. The name had nothing to do with HOW the opal was formed. That experience I had was in Vietnam at an on base hobby shop where the person running the place helped us. He said the reflecting flecks gave the opal the look of internal fire and that was how it got it's name.

Fire does refer to the display of colour.
However fire opal does refer to a reddish to orange body tone. Google it.
Fire opal mainly comes from Ethopia, Mexico and a few other places.

That's the experience I have while studying gemmology.

The Mrs. and I LOVE going opal hunting....We have some very nice ones as well. The only problem with some of them is that they are still "wet" opals, and only good for specimens. Virgin Valley Nevada is where we go and we love the blacks the most, but they are a bit harder to find of course.

Some nice pics on this post, I am an opal lover myself, the nearest opal fields for me are a 10 hour drive away, but I am going next year for sure! Didn't know Ms Peach was into rocks?
