    Rock ID

All right, here's the try without pictures.

I found it in Wisconsin, in the glaciated part.

It's about 3 1/2 inches across and rounded. I picked it up from millions of other stones since it looked hematitic; dark grey/black but with red inclusions about an 1/8", lots of them. It's heavier than most rocks. It's got a 'solid' look, almost like a black quartz or chalcedony, so it looks more like a mineral. It's not sedimentary.

It's a fairly common rock, I'd guess, or else I'd see it for sale.

    Any takers?

    Streak colour?
    Magnetic?

    I'm tempted to think Magnetite.
Geologists are gneiss, tuff, and a little wacke.

You have answered your own question. It is jasper, a form of chalcedony, which is quartz. That one would make a good solid hammerstone.

    Thanks!

I'd maybe make a point out of it, but wouldn't hammer with it.
