cabbs is a shorter term for cabochons, related to a form of lapidary work.

What you have there looks like massive quartz and epidote - no crystals.
Keep a look out for unakite that kind of area.

I am doubtful, what do you base your assumption on if I may ask?

Using only visual properties (like colour) your on a lost cause with over 4000 minerals known to man.

I think you've got a rock there - more then one mineral.

    Re: Strange rocks from today

But serpentine (see picture name) is not olivine and is often very soft - can be scratched with a knife.

Does this look similar to your findings in the rock?

I shall see if I can find one of my own samples for reference.

    LOL - Forget the calcite.

With my own experience from TIB what you pictured is quite similar to basaltic alteration products, I'd think metabasalt is not far away.

    Re: Strange rocks from today

I took the rocks to a local college .The guy in charge takes 1 rock out of the bag & looks at it for about 3 seconds drops it back in & says serpentine ....That was about it after a drive of 45 mins. each way for me.Any how----- i wanted to know what they were,i have gotten some mixed results from others who i know have a lot of exp. in rocks.Like it has no quartz & it is massive quartz.... I know my area had a lot of visitors from the 16th/17th/18th century.. So when detecting i try and find out what it is first & then work on what part of the world it may have come from, because it could be from anywhere in the world.I don't think the rocks came from the earths crust in my area- i have a better chance of a rock falling out of the sky. They could be ship ballast rocks for sure-and that's why a good Id would really help.... Is serpentine really this pretty & magnetic?I don't know any thing about rocks & these are the 1st i brought home from a hunt..This magnet is really not that strong & is off my fridge... Thanks again for the help

    Re: Strange rocks from today

If you like send a few pieces to me, I could try to ID them and make something that could be used in a setting for jewellery. Send me a PM.

Serpentine can be really nice.. Here's a piece I have:
