Any ideas on this sphere?
The black areas are magnetic (see magnet in 1st photo). It's 4 1/2 inched in diameter. Purchased at a garage sale for $2.

Re: Any ideas on this sphere?
Does magnetite "spider" out like the magnetic dark areas on this sphere?
I tried to get a better close up but this is the best I could do, doesn't show too much but it may help-

Re: Any ideas on this sphere?
Seems to be hydrothermally deposited magnetite, but the host rock is more difficult to say.
Probably quartz is somewhere there in the equation as hydrothermal activity rarely excludes it.
Geologists are gneiss, tuff, and a little wacke.

Thanks EU. I can't resist buying rocks and spheres when I see them at sales. Just wish I knew what half of them were.

Re: Any ideas on this sphere?
No problem, I personally like to collect them myself and when possible cut them also.
Here is for example a smokey quartz I cut with my own design to make it look like a cross in the stone:
Keep on posting then, it's always fun to see different kind of rocks.
