Solid Copper Rock?
I was picking up rocks on my farm in NE Kansas and found a weird looking rock. It has been hit a couple of times with a disc and those places look like copper. It is 5 X 2.5" and weighs around 3-4 lbs. Does anyone know what this is? It is not magnetic.

Can't say to much, can you break of a smaller corner or something so we can see a fresh surface?
Is it malleable? Does your detector hit on it?
Just want to make sure its a mineral first, not a pure metal.
I would think, if it is a mineral, one of the copper sulphides is most likely. Chalcopyrite is one of the most common of those.
Geologists are gneiss, tuff, and a little wacke.

Okay, I clipped off one of the loose pieces and put a hammer to it. I was able to flatten the piece out without it busting up all over the place. Does this help? It gives my detector a good ring.

I think you may have a piece of metal there, try the "what's it" forum part for a second opinion.
Either that, or if you can check with a voltmeter if it conducts electricity.
May or may not be naturally occurring, ask someone local who is familiar with the geology or search the internet if natural copper has been found in the area.

I took the metal detector out yesterday and found 1 more piece in the same general location. Same characteristics as the larger piece. This piece is 3" wide and 2" tall.

What will it effect, when all is done?
I agree with marinedad. Could be from Indian trades. They have found Michigan copper from the Upper Peninsula as far south as Mexico. Have you found any Indian Artifacts in your area?
