Could this be a rough diamond?

I broke a rock open and found this inside, just below the surface. I tried the cutting glass test with it, and it put a deep gouge in the glass. The brownish part (brown diamond?) is translucent, and above and to the left of it, is completely colorless, and translucent. I'm new to this site, but have been a rock hoarder (lol) for quite some time. I have other posts that are getting no replies, so any input is much appreciated. Same to you, Jay. I think what you have there is probably citrine quartz. It's still a pretty specimen. If it were diamond, the only way it would be in that type of rock, is if it was a loose diamond, and then had the rock form around it. I've never heard of that happening.

hey jrock, nice quartz,what part of pa are you in, i am in central pa ,i know of a few locations where you can possibly get some gemy material , there is a massive hydro therm in my area that has given up a few good spec.

I'm inclined to suspect citrine, as well, but that looks like pegmatite matrix. The black structure looks like shorl (black tourmaline). I'd be more inclined to think citrine (or topaz, bytownite, labordorite....) if it was in rhyolite. In pegmatite it could be a beryl or zircon , the former of which would be extremely hard while a zircon would run 6 - 7 on the mohs, or any of the other myriad colored stones found in such matrix.

Thanks JLeonhardy. The area is abundant with Pegmatite, and I found quite a few with shorl, so thats a solid possibility I'm gonna look into. Much appreciated!

citrine is one of my favorite gem stones. & the color in that one is amazing. if you go to a jewelry store today, I don't think you would find anything close to that color. & they are usually treated to darken the color. Hope you remember where you found it. I would be going back.

Thanks Brian! I'm gonna have someone take a look at it locally, so I can know for sure what exactly it is. I was going through more of my rocks, and found a bigger one in the middle of another rock.
