Hi Everyone,

I am planning a trip to North Carolina this summer for a gem. This is my first time looking for gems and I was wondering if there is a good overall hammer to buy. I plan on doing this more but I am just starting out and there seems to be a lot of different rock hammers to choose from. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Eastwing Estwing Geological Tools They are made in the USA have a shock adsorbing handle material and all steel construction. I have had several Eastwing hammers and have never had any problems with them.

It depends wholly on you. I prefer my good old geology hammer:

Now a smaller hammer is good for smaller specimens, just like when you are hunting for gems.
My hammer is better for general prospecting where the rocks I may have to sample are bigger. It might be good to have both, but the smaller one is a good start!

A few chisels might be wise to invest in addition to the hammer.
