Anyone know what the heck this is? Found in Lake Michigan. Color in pic is pretty accurate. About 6 on mohs rough estimate. Pretty sloppy to cut, like hematite.

I haven't a clue but it is very interesting! When I saw the color and the spots that look like some kind of cells, I was going to say a petrified Dinosaur organ.:dontknow:

Cool piece, will keep an eye on this thread...since I'm hungry it looks like a petrified pork shoulder. Extremely interesting gem you found!

What is the lustre like? (on a chipped piece)

Due to the grainy structure sandstone or arkose comes to mind.

I have a little experience with sandstone, so I'm thinking that's not it. It bleeds rusty color when cut. Texture is slightly rough and I'm guessing it won't take a glass like shine but more of a matte shine when polished. Sorry...best descriptions I can give!
