Any ides what this is?

We enjoy hunting rocks/fossils as a family but not real knowledgeable about most. This is an interesting rock. Any ideas what it could be? Looks like quartz on the inside and the outside is definitely metallic. Doesn't slough off like shale. I tested it for gold but at the 10k acid test it failed.

That appears to be part of a hydrothermal vein. The outside crust looks to be pyrite and the core is massive milky quartz. Originally it would have been in a crack/fissure and the pyrites would have formed first with the quartz filling in second. Neat piece.

Gold is often caught up with this mineralization., chemically and mechanically. If you are interested in seeing if any gold is present, take a small piece and crush it. Then pan the crushed material and see what you get.
