The waxy looking areas that look melted are chalcedony and the surrounding crystals are slightly altered quartz. Nice specimen to have both present in one piece. Both the crystals and the melted looking part are quartz mineral of two different forms. A good piece to understand when it comes to all the varieties that quartz comes in.

Wow Nice observation they are melted quartz because my nephew got a hold of a torch and some of the stones ......:/ but today at G.I.A they couldn't identify exactly what it was but they said it was some type of fossil... just saying
