Sorry Tammy, but once again that is just a naturally formed stone. Were you thinking it was a Celt or Axe? If so, check these out. These are what a Celt or Axe would look like. If you look close you can see the peck marks and the grinding to make the shape, plus these all have a very discernable blade edge.

Tammy, What part of the country are you in? Maybe you could get together with one of the people on here to go on a hunt. I think that once you can see what you should be looking for, you will start finding some great stuff.

Western Ky is certainly an artifact rich area. If you are patient, and search local farm fields after rain, you will find something for sure.

Tammy, I have seen some incredible artifacts come from the creeks and fields around the Cadiz area. You are in a great spot and definitely have the passion for the hobby. Try checking around to see if there are any clubs you could join in the area or see if there any collectors that would take you hunting. Once you get the feel for what you are looking for you recognize artifacts from just naturally formed stones. I have been collecting for 50 years and I still get fooled by objects I see on the ground until I pick them up and examine them closer. It just takes patience and you will eventually get the hang of it.

i just finished talking to a friend who has been hunting for over 40 years You should of seen his face when I showed him my axe The one you said wasnt I am sending you a few more pictures of it Pull them up close and study those I have been hunting stone tools Not flint That is 2 people that know what they are looking at also plus they have held it There is no way in the world that water could of put the groves in this piece Not the way they are running

All I see in the photos is a natural stone.
I've seen a lot of very crude tools made from less than optimum material in my area.. That's because it's all they had locally. Coming from that area besides the fact I don't see evidence of man on that piece I don't see any reason to use material that weak either.. Plus the fact it doesn't have any signs of use
If I dug it out of an undisturbed site wedged in between other artifacts I would feel more strongly about it possibly being in an abraiding stone or something along those lines it appears to be made of sandstone.. if that was in any way a surface find I would definitely dismiss it from what I see in the photos and what I know about the area that's just my 2 cents.

When I first started finding artifacts here on my property I found a few strange looking rocks I would have bet money where artifacts. Even had a few collector friends tell me they probably are artifacts of some kind because of all the other artifacts found here. After taking some time to educate myself on local artifacts and the materials used, I've learned not all rocks found on a camp, or long term heavily occupied site is an artifact. Not sure why some folks claimed to see artifacts in a few of the rocks, maybe they didn't want to hurt my feelings, maybe they simply didn't know any better explanation for what we where seeing. With all that said, I have to agree with all the others, wrong type of material, except for maybe an abraiding stone as someone mentioned, and shows no sign of being altered by man. I would have to imagine that if they were in moving water over a long period of time then they would be worn down and look more like stone than tool. I wouldn't write them off just yet but also not get my hopes up. I like the intrigue and mystery just as much as the hunt. Good Luck

Tammy, I showed you Stone Tools in the top post. I have lots of Stone Tools including Axes, Celts, Pestles, Hoes, etc and yours is not an Axe. I have studied your pictures very closely and there is no evidence whatsoever that was ever used as an Axe. It has no blade on it at all and it shows no use wear, no battering from being used, and no polish from extended use. No disrespect to your friend but he is obviously clueless. Can you post pictures of his collection? I'm curious to see what he actually calls an Axe or and Stone Tool.


This will be my last attempt at this. These are all Axes, Celts, Pestles, and Hoes. All show pecking, grinding, blade edges, polish etc from manufacture and use. If you can't see the difference in these pieces and yours and see that yours is not an Axe then I am done.

Tammy if you want to believe they are real, then believe it, members are only trying to help you, but if your going to post pictures you can expect experienced members to comment on them and the fact some are geofacts not artifacts.

I go through that area every year and I have some decent permissions out there...lots of flint... I dont normally find or see much hardstone from the area though, but its there... Maybe yours is just a piece of one? Or could be crude... And just another geofact... I have a 20" +/- long rock, like half a wiffle ball bat... And it isnt anything but a long skinny rock. I swore it was a pestle, but there isnt anything distinguishing it to be that, no pecking, shaping, polishing... Nothing... But I still have it!! :-)
