Weird rock?

I found this rock today in a rock pile from an old farm. A little corner was chipped off and it's completely hollow, I've never seen a rock like this. If anyone could tell me what it is, I would really like to know. I was thinking some kind of hardened shale.

More than likely slag or whatever they call it from an old furnace such as a Blacksmith's furnace but it is possible that it could be from a coal stove! It results from burning coal with lots of other compounds in it such as Iron, etc., etc..

Thanks for the response, but I thought slag was usually metal. I've tested this with my metal detector, pinpointer, and magnet and it seems like it's just a rock.

Is there not a slight bit of peacock ore - and possible many other minerals
