After seeing posts from RainorShine and StephLeigh (thank you both!), I was just itching to get out and find some beautiful Fairburn agates. I have been out a few times but I have never found any. So yesterday, I finished classes and headed to Railroad Buttes. I found a handful of Fairburns and a backpack full of prairie agates. It sure felt good to get back out there rockhounding!

Good hunt :) If you tumble them they should really pop out.

It took me forever to find a decent one! I like some of the Prairies a lot! They are decoration in my Fish Tank! We will have to team up one day and head out to Indian Creek or the Conata Basin!

That would be a blast! I always enjoy meeting new people with the same passions. I had been out a few times and that was the first I had seen one. I am still trying to find a really nice one though. What's out at Indian Creek or the Conata Basin? I'm still trying to learn the spots out here.

Sorry ageofdiscovery, but to me the only one that looks like it could possibly be a fairburn is the little pinkish one. I just don't see the right kind of banding. Fairburns have a unique pattern and tight banding. Prairies seem to have no rime or reason. Hope I'm wrong though.

No worries, hey you live and learn. I value your expertise though. Plus it was fun to just get out. Now I have reason to get back out there and keep looking until I find a "true" one. I hope I can soon find an undisputable one. I'm thinking about heading back out there sometime this week. The weather looks really nice!

Wish i could join you. Unfortunately, I've got bills to pay. I was out two weekends ago in that horrible wind for 6 hrs. Found jack squat. Thats the nature of the game. When you do find one, there will be no question. They almost have geometric shapes in the banding. Good luck on your next trip. And if you ever want to come down to custer and look for some teepee canyon agates, let me know

That would be a lot of fun, one of these times we will have to do that. I know exactly what you mean, I often have those days when I'm metal detecting (well, I always find something but in terms of something more notable). I pulled out those "agates" today and the more I looked at them the more I doubted it. So you are more than likely right. Thanks for the luck, I'm going to need it! I would really like to come down some time and find some teepee canyon agates. It would be fun to add some more agates to add to the growing collection.
