In an effort to get my son off his phone and computer, he and I have taken up rock hunting. We found this on a road that had been covered with river rock many years ago. He and I don't know what to make of the mark on the rock so any and all input will be appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome from White Plains, New York! Those are "iron stains." Either rusting iron in the conglomerate rock, or where it was lodged against another iron infused rock. :occasion14:

Looks to me like the staining came from metal instead of from iron-rich rock.
