can someone ID this rock for me? my son is doing a science project on the rock cycle. he can pick any kind of rock so he needs to know the name.
it was found in GA.
weighs 4 Oz's
very magnetic
chipped it and it's black with shiny specks inside.
I put a dollar coin for sizing.
any additional info that would help his project would be great also.
thank you.

Doing a science project then have him read up on streak testing and hardness testing and have a go with the sample you have there. See if those tests point towards the mineral Magnetite and take a look at online resources like minedat , mineralsnet and other sources. These combined should make a good presentation.
