Michigan Puddingstone

This is by far the largest puddingstone I`ve seen. My bic lighter is on top for size. Anyone found one bigger? ---------Bob

What exactly is a puddingstone?

Puddingstone is a rock that my Grandmother used to collect. We found alot of it at her cabin in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan along with copper as the cabin is in Copper Harbor. Everytime I see one I think of my Grandmother!

Puddingstone, or Pudding stone, is a conglomerate rock made up of a mixture of different, irregular sized grains and pebbles held together by a finer matrix, usually formed from quartz sand. The sedimentary rock is formed in river channels and may contain various minerals such as chromite, corundum, platinum, diamond, gold, sapphire, and zircon. Its name is said to derive from a resemblance to Christmas pudding.

Thanks for the info Bob, we have similar rocks here,
they are leftover from ancient 'sea beds'.
Copper from your area was found in a local Indian
mound, along with 'conch shells' from the Gulf of Mexico,
mica, crystal from Ar.
They must have had an extensive trade route.
