12 -15lbs Agate

Was curious if anyone had an idea value (rough estimate) of this cool find..

That's a big one, got any more photos? can you see any banding on it?

No not really in this pic u can see were the outer layer(husk). These are all rough soap And vinegar only. ) vine gar.

Without examining it in person, in natural daylight, the best I can give you is a range of value. This would be based on color mix, color texture, banding, if any, plus any visible fractures and other evidence of weakness. Essentially, I would be evaluating potential as a good cutting material.

Without a personal evaluation, my estimate would be between $0.25 per pound and $3.00 per pound. Others may have other opinions.

well, I hate to be a downer here but it looks like quartzite to me which would make it essentially worthless :-(

Only way to know for sure is pics in natural light (observational properties in dark or flash contaminated photos are hard to distinguish) with good focus. Or if you have a saw hack off an end cut and back-light it

Quartzsite could be correct. I have been known to occasionally mistake one for another in photos. Higher quality images in natural light would be helpful.

I'm not seeing evidence of it being a Superior Agate, which would make it obnoxiously valuable. Cutting a window wouldn't hurt but the pic with the relatively fresh chip/fracture doesn't look promising.

I dunno why the Superior agates command such high prices but won't complain, I bought a good one in a box with other nice rocks for a buck, sold it for 800. Keep your eyes open, there are good ones still waiting to be found in Minnesota.

the very large ones weigh about a pound, and are extremely few and far between. They formed in basalt amygdules and don't generally get very big hence the high price for large ones especially with good banding/colors.

Hah no, but it was a darn good peeler as far as they go (around 1.5lb I think):



Completely loaded with banding and good color, hence the respectable price.

I think I have another 1 or 2 good ones floating around also purchased for peanuts.

That's one of the best Lakers I've ever seen, but $800?? People are crazy lol
