I've found gold occasionally when panning for gems like garnet and topaz after classifying the big stuff and then looking for smalls. Its a habit of mine to see if there's gold in the bottom of the pan though, or other heavies.

I also find gold at times when I am panning for sapphires, or garnets.

The two are completely unrelated, you can find gold with anything if that was what you were wondering.

I disagree Moesia. Its a valid question simply because the methods used for prospecting for gold and gems are somewhat different as well as the geology in most cases. Most gem prospecting does not go down to the fine's level were gold is usually found but in doing so gold prospectors often come up with more side finds than do gem prospectors.

I am not disparaging his question, you misunderstood my post.

I think it is a great question and it made me think.

I suspect few who are separating gems find much gold, for the simple reason that most gold is quite small and most people will classify out the sands before looking for gems. However, I have seen videos of people who have set up their sluices for gems, but have a "just in case" mat at the front for gold. Of course, a larger nugget could easily be found if there when prospecting placer gems.
