Hey all, have another lovely addition to my collection- discovering California has black jade; I couldn't believe it until if found it:

Here is a 1842 dollar coin for scale.

Note the brown rind within green so dark it's virtually black.

That's all for today. More wonderful samples coming from me pretty soon! :icon_thumleft:

Northern California, from the coast to the Sierras, has many greenstones that, as river cobble, resemble both dark green and black jade. When I did lapidary, I sometimes could not determine which until a piece was cut and polished.

Time for more coffee.

Good find!

That takes me back to Limekiln Creek and the days of my youth in the 1950s -- dark green jade and black jade. I still have some that i collected then, smooth, slick, and mysterious.

It is wonderful. I didn't believe it until I felt the stone- it's heavy, dense and smooth as silk! The brown and green rinds with the ultra-dark green stood out and I completed an online search to confirm. Will post more wonderful finds from my ever-growing collection.
