    Melting silver- ?

    Anyone try to do it ?
    If so how and to what form --- bars / rounds?
    I have probably 300oz. of old/ busted/broken items such as forks, candle holders, plates all stamped 925 or sterling.

    Why mess with it? If you are only melting it, and not refining it, you just end up with a silver looking block of metal with no hallmarks left on it. Not only that, it's still just .925. So what do you gain?

    You would be better off selling the good hallmarked stuff on ebay. Chances are pretty good you will get spot or even better right now.

    Agree with SilverSaddle but...
    Lots of people have various little backyard foundries for smelting silver, copper, etc...
    Very interesting hobby to me.

    Might make an interesting hobby but I don't know why someone would take the time and pay the cost of melting down metals that could be taken directly to the scrap yard. Even precious metals would be better taken in as-is so as not to lose their identity.
