Living in Forest Grove, where Compass Metal Detectors used to be manufactured, has always made me want one of their scanner or challenger series machines. I've only been at the hobby a few years, however, and they're hard to come by. Recently, the metal detecting gods blessed (or cursed) me with a gorgeous, never used XP-350 in the original box for next to no money. However, I put batteries in the thing and absolutely nothing happened. I then put them in the wrong way and it made some death pops/crackles and computer-y sounds.

Does anybody know how likely it is that this machine is toast? If so, how do I get it fixed? I've heard the capacitors in the coils can fail over time. Could this be what it is? Thank you.
