    Summer Field School 2006

    Summer Field School 2006
    Two Rivers, Wisconsin
    May 16 - June 22

This summer the Program in Maritime Studies of East Carolina University
will conduct a Phase II pre-disturbance survey of the bulk carrier
Continental, which wrecked in Lake Michigan near Two Rivers, Wisconsin, in
1904. The focus of the field school will be on recording Continental's
compound engine, but we will also document the vessel's hull. Field school
students will learn a full range of underwater archaeological mapping and
    recording techniques.

All students must enroll in ECU's History 5530, which provides two semester
hours of credit at the graduate and undergraduate level. The cost of
tuition is $144 per credit hour for in-state tuition and $570 per credit
hour for out-of-state tuition. The dates for the field school are May 16
thru June 22. Dive training for the field school will be held May 8-19,
2004 in Greenville, North Carolina. This training includes pool and open
water exercises. There will be a diving fee of approximately $150 for this
part of the course. Students will be responsible for their own housing and
food during their stay in Greenville. Dorm rooms may be available through
    University Housing Services (252-328-4033).

Fees, in addition to the tuition, include a $500 lab fee charged to cover
field school expenses. Housing in Wisconsin will be provided. Meals are
not included. Please contact our office assistant, Karen Underwood, at
underwoodk@mail.ecu.edu if you are interested in attending the field
school. She will mail you all the forms necessary for admission that you
will need to fill out and return.

Diving Safety forms can be obtained through the University Diving Safety
Office. These forms are on-line and must be filled out. Go to
www.ecu.edu/diving and click on "How to Become Qualified as a Scientific
Diver" to locate the necessary forms. The medical form needs to be printed
and given to your doctor to be filled out and returned.
