Re: Old photo of object found.

Dived to look for the object in the old photo and found two musket shots, one large 5 inch diameter cannon ball and a small cannon which is heavy in crud and stuck to rocks, the cannon is about 85cm. Going to try and lift it soon. Took some photos but cant seem to post them here I think they are to large.Any info on small cannons would be good. It not the object in the old photo and I am sure its not a swivel gun. Will take some more photos when I have it on the surface.
Thanks

Mr Nibbs

What part of UK is the wreck ?, might be able to offer up some potential names.

I would not lift the gun until you have a way of stabilising it as it would not last long. (keeping it wet and changing the water regulary should hold it for a good few years if you cant treat it now).

Re: Old photo of object found.

Are you joking? It is not a gun! From the second photo one can clearly see it is a "human body"...face down, with ropes around the neck. There is an alligator resting its head on his/her left shoulder!

Re: Old photo of object found.

Got the cannon, lots of hard work, tampon still intact and in place. Hope to get it x-ray soon. Thought it was only 85cm but it turned out that was a slight hole in the of the cannon. Its going to comein at about 1.3 ish meters.

Re: Old photo of object found.

Resized and rotated. Hope you dont mind. Looks very cool. Cant wait to see pics of the x-rays. Just a reminder to be carefull if there is still gunpowder inside. Wet is good, but dried out, it can become VERY DANGEROUS.

Re: Old photo of object found.

Mr Nibbs . Let me give you some good advice and that is to keep your cards close to your chest . There are too many people that say they want to help you but in the meantime only are after the location of the wreck . I don't like to tell you this but I think I should for your protection. Regards and good sailing . Cornelius

Re: Old photo of object found.

Mr Nibbs,

Congrats on your recovery.

Now, get that back in fresh water, completely submerged! The container shown is too small, unless you want to be constantly changing the water. Use fresh water, and for the first 3 months, change it about 2 times a week. You can check the pH with a simple tester, but change the water when the pH reads 1 point less than the initial fill (ie if your water reads 6.7 on initial fill, change when you get to 5.7)

If when you have it out of the water, if it starts fizzing, get it back in the water ASAP, the gunpowder has started to react with the air.

You will need to keep the artefact in fresh water for about 3 to 5 years. When the pH balances out, you know you have balanced the artefact.

At this point, as you have removed the concretion, there is little need to x-ray the artefact. Should you want to, for fun, find a vet with a portable, as these are far more powerful than ones in a hospital. The films is about $20/sheet...but you will likely not see anything as the metal is too thick.

It would be prudent to save the concretions you have removed, and xray those for small pieces that may have been coagulated with artefact.

After the freshwater bath has stabilized the artefact, you then need to consider if you want to take further steps such as electrolysis and final finish. The electrolysis will involve a cathotic reaction with anodes such as platinum coated bars. This will take about 18 months to 2 years to complete. The finish is your choice after that, perhaps tannins or others.

Again, this is at least a 5 year process...there is no need to rush.
