Interesting Conference

A conference which may be of interest to some people here:

Second call for papers

4th symposium on Preserving Archaeological Remains in situ (PARIS4)

May 23rd - 26th 2011

The National Museum of Denmark, Copenhagen

International legislation, such as the Valetta treaty, calls for the
"conservation and maintenance of the archaeological heritage, preferably in
situ". Since 1996 research into in situ preservation has been presented at a
series of international conferences: Preserving Archaeological Remains in situ
(PARIS). The fourth of these conferences will be held in Copenhagen at the
National Museum of Denmark in May 2011.

After fifteen years of research and practical application the time is ripe to
evaluate the efficacy of in situ preservation as a means of managing the
cultural resource. The key aim of the conference is to present and discuss the
latest knowledge, focusing on long term studies of degradation and monitoring
of archaeological sites preserved in situ in urban, rural and marine
environments.

One of the strengths of the previous PARIS conferences has been in their
multidisciplinary nature bringing together scientists, heritage managers and
policy makers. Building on this the organizers especially call for
presentations from practitioners and stakeholders to cover the following
themes:

1. Degradation of archaeological remains. Can we quantify degradation rates
and what rates are acceptable?

2. Monitoring and mitigation case studies - with special focus on long term
projects. How, and how long, should sites be monitored?

3. Protocols, standards and legislation for monitoring and management.
Is it realistic to make multinational standards when the sites and national
legislations are so variable?

4. Preserving Archaeological Remains in situ. Can we document the
effectiveness of in situ preservation after nearly 2 decades of research?

All sessions will be lead by two chairmen: one practitioner and one
administrator, who will both evaluate and comment upon the presentations. The
presentations are planned to be published as a special edition of the journal
Conservation and Management of Archaeological Sites.

Proposals for papers, with abstracts of less than 300 words, should be sent
to: David Gregory/Henning Matthiesen, The National Museum of Denmark,
Department of Conservation, IC Modewegsvej, DK-2800 Lyngby, Denmark, or by fax
+45 33 47 33 27 or by email to paris4@natmus.dk by the 1st of September 2010.
Oral and poster presentations will be selected by a scientific committee on
the basis of relevance to the themes, scientific quality and ability to reach
a mixed audience. Please indicate if you would prefer oral or poster
presentation.

More information and a conference flyer is available at:

This one I am going to have some fun with!

Let us see how open minded these folks actually are!
Since 1987 our Jupiter Wreck has continued to yield coins but the question, "Where's the rest of the Ship?" has remained unanswered... There are 2 layers of shipwreck scatter and we are equipping the "Enterprise" to excavate the primary treasure layer. Join with us this year!

Re: Interesting Conference

I already submitted an abstract.

Lets see if they even reply to it.

They will not have the jewels to either debate or listen
to an academic dissertation about the realities of in situ
preservation in a high energy surf zone environment!

Dom: if you were a member of their "club", as in an academic or museum type who publically denounced treasure hunting and of course ownership of artifacts, then you would be welcomed with open arms. Since you are successful at finding treasure and don't use any taxpayer's money to do so, your observations will be dismissed out of hand just as they are by the state "experts" that issue your permits.

Keep up the good work and maybe it is time for all of us archaeological infidels to have our own conferences and publications. How does that sound?

These folks make up the majority of subscribers to "Sub-Arch". You will find 98% of them neither "open" nor with a "mind" to comprehend such ideas. I am sure your abstract will be seen as treason and not worthy of the paper it is written on by these folks. These "meetings" are closed to the likes of us and should you show up in person, you would have no chance of even getting in. Now, on that note, best of luck to you and most of all, HAVE FUN with it.

Re: Interesting Conference

They call it "Insitu Preservation" and then ask the following question:

Degradation of archaeological remains. Can we quantify degradation rates
and what rates are acceptable?

Priceless !!

I suspect you will find these folks are more concerned with power & control within their field, than with anything else.

Have you ever heard the saying,

"the emperor has no clothes"

If they accept my presentation and paper....

I am going to have to sell some coins to buy the airplane ticket
so as to show up at the conference!

Re: Interesting Conference

Saturna: you hit the nail on the head, it is about who controls access to the resource, not what happens to the resource that really matters. My experience with the powers that be has convinced me that these bureaucrats are far more interested in showing everyone who is boss and who is pure than they are in doing what is best for shipwrecks. I took a graduate course once with a member of the NPS SCRU Team and he said he would rather see shipwrecks destroyed by dredging or dragging than to have a treasure hunter touch them!

Dom: if you are allowed to speak at this conference please start off by saying you had to sell some coins to pay for the trip, they'll choke on their Chardonnay.

If I go there I would probably be dealt with like Cesar in the senate!

Maybe I can borrow a chain mail suit to wear or something!

I do have to thank this "sub-arch group" of one thing. Great advertising. Several of my past ebay auctions have ended up being posted on their "forum" and sent to all their croonies. It is only then, that my bidding has gone sky high and the item has sold at 2x - 3x what I was hoping for.

They got no jewels.....
There all left in situ....

But, some of them are real sneaky

The chicks in Copenhagen are slick
They would protect me

Re: Interesting Conference

I just got a response from them.
They have my abstract in their Que.

They review all the abstracts after the cut off date
in September. Then notify applicants if selected.

Below is the title of my abstract:
Isn't this what preservation of a historic record all about?

High Energy and or Surf Zone Shipwreck Sites

Rescue Archeology verses in situ Preservation of Surf Zone Shipwreck Sites

What is most significant about this paper will be the ability to observe the rates of deterioration of a mid 17th century maritime event’s artifacts; discerning factually meaningful data about the event, while maintaining a working partnership with public and private sector interests.

Anyhow I hope they let me take them on: I am spending entirely too much time hogging the blogs on this site.
This will keep me busy for a while - if my abstract actually is accepted....
